The book is in excellent condition with pale blue boards with art deco style decoration to upper board and silver titles. This edition includes  black and white illustrations by Daniel Whistler and Denys Baker, as well as maps on endpapers. The slipcase is in very good condition with minimal shelfwear.

 

First published in 1977, and winner of the WH Smith prize the following year, this travel memoir describes the first part of author's walk from the Hook of Holland to Constantinople (Istanbul). In this book he got as far as the MIddle Danube. It was in 1933, and he was eighteen years old.
