The book is in very good condition for its age, with minimal wear or marking to the original pictorial cloth binding. This is the second edition printing of Hugh Thomson's illustrated edition of Elizabeth Gaskell's episodic Victorian novel.

The book contains an illustrated frontispiece and numerous vignette illustrations, as well as head and tail pieces by Thomson.

Gaskell was known for her stark depictions of Victorian society, with this work depicting rural village life and inspired by the author's own experiences.

The book contains a single page of publisher's adverts to the rear.
