For fifty-nine years from January 1891, the 'Strand Magazine' published a mixture of fiction, general-knowledge snippets, curiosities, popular-interest journalism and commentary that seized and retained Britain's attention. The hallmarks were textual energy and visual liveliness: many leading British writers contributed, and the art editors offered an illustration on every opening.
