Published by The Folio Society, London, 1997. The book is in excellent condition, with blue cloth boards, that includes a block design in a secondary colour and gilt on the upper board (and on the spine) which is by David Eccles,  and based on an Egyptian enamel. The slipcase has some wear to the edges, but overall in very good condition with a design by Henry Salt.

The title page includes a small colour painting, frontis photograph of a sculpture and many other colour, black and white, and monochrome photographs, all the paintings by named artists in full-colour, some excellent pencil sketches, maps drawn by Denys Baker.

This book deals, almost exclusively, with the British contribution to the recording of ancient Egyptian civilisation over almost two centuries. It tells a story of determined labour, undertaken often in difficuly and dangerous circumstances. It emphasises the little-known amateur and professional workers who laboured on the recording of monuments and the copying of inscriptions from which a comprehensive picture has emerged.
