Hugh Thomson was one of the most charming of early twentieth century gift book illustrators, capturing the nostalgic charm of yesteryear better than anyone. While he is not as popular these days as Dulac and Rackham, he should not be dismissed as just an illustrator of pretty or cutesy scenes. This book shows he was far more versatile and accomplished than commonly thought as well.
