The books are in excellent condition, with gilt lettering and design on spine and front boards, with full and vivid insert illustrations. The books are secured within a 'Lord of the Rings' gilt lettered burgundy box, alongside an Elven design to one side. The illustrations are extended into the three volumes as black and white inserts, full-page drawings, as well as endpaper maps that plot the Fellowship's journey to Mordor; these are all done by Ingahild Grathmer and Eric Fraser.
